^You will be able to play the songs at the link when it's midnight in your region. Mildly disappointed there's only three songs, but the rumors of a boxset due in February give me hope.

What a strange release. Did everything else they were concerned about retaining copyright on happen in '68 or '70, or what?

What a strange release. Did everything else they were concerned about retaining copyright on happen in '68 or '70, or what? It appears so. I guess there won't be any major surprises on the box set regarding 1969. I still can't get passed the cover art! Could it look any cheaper? You'd think a major group like the Beach Boys would require a marginally higher standard.

From the random nature of what gets a physical release and what doesn't to the cover art (the Party release cover art also).

I'm admittedly not as up on this copyright retention stuff as I should be but...I have to think this three-song set serves as a teaser or a sampler of something much bigger to come. There are rumors floating around about a five CD boxed set in 2020. Maybe all an artist has to do is commit or show some concrete evidence that they will be releasing the material in a certain time frame, and they are afforded some kind of a grace period. Didn't those Sunshine Tomorrow/Live Sunshine releases last year come out a few months into the next year?
Anyway, I think "I'm Going Your Way" is a strong track. It has a late 60's edgy, rockier feel, which I like; I hear some "Celebrate The News" in there I believe. The backing track of "Slip On Through" is OK, but it's not essential. And, I guess it's nice to finally have a clear, extended version of "Carnival" - for completists only!

Today, the official BB account on Twitter announced its release, which I think says it all.

I hope these will end up on the supposedly imminent box set, and aren't just a separate one-off. I know it's only three songs but I'd like to have them all in one place.

Today, the official BB account on Twitter announced its release, which I think says it all. Yes, that does say it all, doesn't it? While it's a matter of opinion of course, I would think this new collection encompassing 1970-71 would be one of, if not THE most desirable set for Beach Boys' fans. Yet the group (BRI) has been almost silent. Why? Where is Jerry Schilling? Frequently you read/hear fans comparing The Beach Boys to The Beatles and other major acts of the rock era. But, how many of THOSE groups would be so quiet about an impending release like this? Do you get the feeling that even the surviving Beach Boys - Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce, David, Blondie, and Ricky - could care less about this 1970-71 set, other than how many $$$$$$$$$$ it might bring in (pocket change for most of 'em actually).

Something occurred to me about this today. Has the song "I'm Going Your Way" ever been released before in an official capacity? I know it was always kicking around as a boot, but off the top of my head don't remember it having been on a comp before.
The reason I ask is, it's included here as an "alternate vocal take." That would make a person think it had been previously released with the non-alternate vocal take. But I can't recall if it has, or where.

No, "I'm Going Your Way" aka "California Slide" has never been officially released. The only explanation I can think of for the "alternate vocal take" description is that somebody - Mark Linnett and/or Alan Boyd? - lifted a vocal take (the one ultimately used for this release) from an early version, a rougher version, maybe a demo version, and paired it with the most finished backing track (again the one ultimately used for this release). You know, the vocal originally used with the best backing track was nixed and substituted with "an alternate take".

That seems like an odd choice. Mixing and matching takes to make the best master is par for the course, and had been for years before that was recorded. Especially in that no version had ever (officially) been released, any take they used would have been the official take.

It might be proven to be an alternate to the "definitive" version ultimately released on the box set.

It might be proven to be an alternate to the "definitive" version ultimately released on the box set. Could be. Which is an equally bizarre thing to do! Maybe the box was intended to come out first (and didn't say "alternate" or something), has already been printed, but then they rushed this out when that was delayed or something. Who knows.
I guess it's pretty minor in the history of odd Beach Boys trivia. But it just occurred to me today.

Especially in that no version had ever (officially) been released, any take they used would have been the official take. Oh, yeah, I get what you're saying. Since the song was never officially released, and the "mixing and matching" created the ONLY completely finished version, it really wasn't necessary to use the term "Alternate Take". Was it just a marketing ploy to add more...mystique...to the song? Hey, don't forget, it's The Beach Boys we're talking about here.

It might be proven to be an alternate to the "definitive" version ultimately released on the box set. Yes, I could see that. With no disrespect to Dennis Wilson or BRI for releasing the box set, while I like "I'm Going Your Way" a lot, I really don't have much need for an "alternate vocal take" version. I mean, the vocal (part) is nice, but I can't see how an alternate take would be that much different or that much better. But that's what you get when you have a multi-CD set that covers only a year or two.
