I think the two most divisive albums in the Beach Boys catalog are Love You and Smiley. I never had a problem with Smiley. Yes, the production is minimalist, but oh, those vocals! If I had been around in 67 and lived through all the hype about Smile, I probably would have been disappointed like everyone else; but hearing it for the first time in 1984, I had a clue as to what to expect. What is the cliche'? He/she has a face that only a mother could love. Well, I think Smiley Smile and Love You are albums that only Beach Boys' fans could love. They both had their moments of brilliance, they both are VERY Brian, and they both did damage to the group's career at the time of their release. It has been written by some fans and journalists - incorrectly by the way - that Brian wasn't...allowed...to record what he wanted due to pressure by the group, specifically due to one particular member. Well, your honor, I submit Exhibit A and Exhibit B - Smiley Smile and The Beach Boys Love You.

Spot on. But, what's funny about this, is that my Brian Wilson / Beach Boys fandom has never been called into question when I'd write negative things about Smiley Smile.

Back in 1977, Patti Smith wrote a review of The Beach Boys Love You:
Thanks for reminding me of that article, Sheriff. As for Love You... I didn't know what to make of this album (it just made me feel uncomfortable) until it dawned on me that this was Outsider Music. If it had been the only BB album it would have earned Brian a chapter in Irwin Chusid's book on that subject instead of just a few dismissive sentences in the introduction. Looked at in that light, I can't give it marks out of ten! But I do appreciate it far more now.

The Beach Boys had a release party for Love You in early 1977:

In the photo with Brian at the piano, you can see the first issue of the short-lived newsletter/publication by David Leaf, called Pet Sounds. I actually found and purchased this issue in a very small magazine store in my hometown. I don't recall ever seeing a second issue at the store, but I know there was one.
In the top photo above, it looks like Dennis picked it up from the piano and is holding the crumpled-up copy in his hand. In one of the other photos, it appears that the icing on the cake was designed to replicate the Love You album cover. And, I guess Brian was smoking True cigarettes at the time (never heard of 'em). Yes, I need a life.

Check out Bruce and his "ugly" Christmas sweater years before they were hip.

Check out Bruce and his "ugly" Christmas sweater years before they were hip. And in more clothing trivia, it appears that Brian was wearing the same shirt that he wore at the 12/31/76 New Year's Eve post-concert party, and the one that ended up on the inner sleeve of Love You. Do you get the feeling that when Brian liked a shirt, he REALLY liked it, and wore it and wore it...

Here's a better photo of The Beach Boys Love You cake. I see they splurged on the plates.

Who is that guy standing next to Dennis? He looks like a clean shaven Dennis.

I, for one, am shocked, appalled, and offended they would use the scantily clad Kathy to promote Love You.

Who is that guy standing next to Dennis? He looks like a clean shaven Dennis. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it is the Beach Boys' then-road manager, Jason Raphalian.
