Between larger unhealthy meals, heavy seasonal beers, and cookies, I overdid it again this Christmas. As I near 40, eating bad and imbibing too often tends to flare up my acid reflux. I also have acid reflux. I take Protonix and that keeps in under control. The only time it acts up is if I eat something later in the evening and then go to bed too soon afterwards. So, it's not so much what I eat but when I eat it.

Today is the last of my Christmas obligations: my parents, siblings & their families will be assembling to celebrate together later this morning. I've got to be honest, especially considering my already less-than-glowing feeling about holidays, putting the family's event last, after the holiday has come and gone, does not add to any feelings of cheer! Honestly I'm in "get it over with, already" mode, and really hoping nephews can keep their insanity to a minimum and germs to themselves.
But I swear I won't be a grinch! I can pretend to be nice!

Cherish those times together. They won't last forever. And, I'm sure you are even more aware of that this year with your father's recent health scare.

I've rarely done it, but something always felt off about post Dec 25 Christmas gatherings. Despite leaving my decorations up until after New Years, I typically cease any Yuletide activities after the 25th, such as listening to Christmas music, watching Christmas shows, etc. I hate how quickly the season goes, but by Dec 26, I'm ready to move on.

I have three sisters and had a few aunts/uncles (who are now deceased), and years ago, the week after Christmas, each night we would visit a different house - you know, see their Christmas tree and decorations, eat some Christmas cookies and have a few drinks, maybe see what they got for Christmas, take a few family pictures, and basically have a nice holiday visit. We used to jokingly call it "the caravan".
I have to admit that by the end of the week, we kinda got tired of seeing everyone. We ran out of things to say! But it was a nice family tradition. I always felt that if you were going to spend the time putting up a tree and getting all of those decorations out, and go to the trouble of baking Christmas goodies, oh, and cleaning the house , then I want somebody to see the house and eat the stuff!
Well, we don't have "the caravan" anymore. Like I said, some of the relatives are gone, some live farther away, and some just don't want to...entertain anymore. But I miss it. I thought it was a good family tradition.

We've often had oddly timed "Christmases." As a kid, my dad was a cop for a small, rural county department: he worked when he worked, and so we'd do our Christmas on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or whenever. But then two sets of grandparents in different cities already complicated that.
Once we got older, my eldest brother was a pastor, which meant his Christmases were spoken for. Kind of a job requirement! So we still ended up going here or there this or that day.
He passed away a couple years ago (so believe me, SJS, the fleeting nature of it all isn't lost on me, even well before my dad's recent rough stretch), but the schedules remain complicated. Sometimes I wish we all lived in the same metro area, with shorter travels to get together, to make it less of a big deal to pull off. Others, I'm quite happy for my couple-hour cushion...
Anyway, I'm home (with so, so many leftover sweets) and done with the holiday. The only remaining holiday event for me is cheering on the (football) Gophers against Auburn on New Year's Day!

This morning the radio was running an assortment of end-of-decade summary stories. I know this is probably too obvious to warrant saying, but I can't help it: a decade is WAY to big a thing to summarize easily in some little 20-second clip as part of a 3-minute story.
So many people with so many different experiences over 10 years!? I can't even sum up my own decade in any meaningful way, much less THE decade.
It reminds me of an argument I got into decades ago now about generational descriptions: "Baby Boomers think X; GenX act Y;" etc. I don't buy it, other than in such broad strokes as to be meaningless. That's how I feel about decades.

Speaking of New Years, I hope this "Roaring 20s" thing is a New Years only thing.

Speaking of New Years, I hope this "Roaring 20s" thing is a New Years only thing. I only said it as a play on the cliche about the 1920s. Are people actually saying it more broadly? I don't even know what I'd want it to mean in reality.
