Yeah, I've been so caught up on 50th Anniversaries of other things like albums, Woodstock, Manson murders, etc, that this one snuck up on me. I've been avoiding the Manson stuff like the plague, and I have zero desire to see Tarantino glorify his works with his usual blend of forced "cool" dialog and cartoony blood. I don't go to many movies but I'm a Tarantino fan and I've been reading good reviews about this new movie - and the soundtrack! I might have to catch this one.

I mean, how can it not be if the movie is set in 1969? But, I think he's highly overrated.

… isn't it time to finally unleash some of the live stuff from the vaults? Do you have Live At The Hollywood Bowl? Any thoughts on that?

On this date in 1966, The Beatles played their final ticketed concert at Candlestick Park.

SJS, you may be facing an uphill battle with me on Beatles For Sale, but I'm definitely looking forward to your thoughts on the album. I love most of The Beatles' albums; I like ALL of them. That being said, I struggle with Beatles For Sale. First, I will admit it has an underdog feeling to it, being sandwiched between two classics - A Hard Day's Night and Help!.
I'll get right to the point. I think Beatles For Sale lacks any of the upper tier, "greatest" Beatles' songs that appear on most of their other albums. Oh, there are some fine songs on Beatles For Sale, just not any all-timers. Close though. "Rock And Roll Music", "Eight Days A Weeks" (slightly overrated to me anyway), "Baby's In Black", and "I'm A Loser". Your mileage may vary. Maybe you could also include "I'll Follow The Sun" and "Every Little Thing" in that list. Hey, I don't really know! This album just does not resonate with me like it does with some other Beatles' fans. I have a hard time getting into it.
This I know - two of the best songs from the sessions were left off the album because they were released as a single and that would be "I Feel Fine"/"She's A Woman". They are two of my favorite Beatles' songs, not just from this batch of songs, but ever. Obviously, those two songs would've improved Beatles For Sale significantly. And, there was another song, another head-scratcher that went unreleased - "Leave My Kitten Alone". What a great rocker, and one of John's best vocals. How could they leave it off the album! Think of how much better Beatles For Sale would've been with those three above songs included.
The strength of the album, and the one thing I usually take away from Beatles For Sale is that it SOUNDS like a "John album". He sings the majority of the songs, his lyrics really resonate, and conversely, I don't hear much Paul in the mix (that's a negative, though). "Honey Don't" might be my favorite Ringo song, and George more than does "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby" justice. Good Carl Perkins' covers there.
I'm not a big enough Beatles' fan to know what they were trying to accomplish with Beatles For Sale, but why all the covers? This album reminds be a little bit of 15 Big Ones. Half new songs and half oldies, with some quality material not included. And the sequencing? Beatles For Sale is one of the worst sequenced albums by a major recording act. Opening with "No Reply", "I'm A Loser", and "Baby's In Black"? How depressing, especially when you had "Rock And Roll Music" sitting right there. Oh, I understand why groups and record companies sequenced the way they did, starting album sides with the singles and original material. And closing with "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby"? Why? It makes no sense. They should've come out firing with it. Beatles For Sale had a song that I think would've been the perfect closer in "Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey" with Paul and the group singing and FADING WITH "bye bye".
I'll respect the trend back in the day to release singles and leave those songs off the album. I don't agree with it, but I'll accept it and NOT add "I Feel Fine" and "She's A Woman" to the album. "Leave My Kitten Alone" is another thing. No excuse. Oh, and while some people might like "Mr. Moonlight", I'm saying "bye bye" to it. Here's my alternate Beatles For Sale:
The Beatles - 14 Big Ones
Side 1 01 Rock And Roll Music 02 It's OK, er, Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby 03 Words Of Love (yes, I know they never would've opened with three covers) 04 Eight Days A Week 05 Every Little Thing 06 Honey Don't 07 What You're Doing
Side 2 08 No Reply 09 Leave My Kitten Alone 10 Baby's In Black 11 I'll Follow The Sun 12 I Don't Want To Spoil The Party 13 I'm A Loser 14 Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey

As we discussed on the thread about checking out on things, I just can't justify these big deluxe edition purchases. There have been plenty tempting offerings from The Beatles, Sabbath, Rainbow, Floyd, etc. But, too rich for my blood.

I'll probably pick it up eventually, but for now I'm content with streaming. The first tracks I listened to were "Goodbye" and "The Long One". "Goodbye" is a demo by Paul. If he hadn't given it to Mary Hopkin, or if it weren't a hit, I could definitely hear this on McCartney. Perhaps, as the closing track? "The Long Run" is a trial edit from July 30, 1969 of the medley. It's pretty interesting. "Her Majesty" is between "Mean Mr. Mustard" and "Polythene Pam" and it's a thoroughly rough mix.
Alternatively, I'll be all over the Let It Be films when they are released!

Yeah, I saw that it's out but don't really plan on it. I think I'm mostly done with "sessions/outtakes" kinds of collections, actually. Unreleased tunes, sure.
