My two most gob-smacking surprised-to-hear moments were both five years ago. The first was in a restaurant where we were hiring a room for a celebration. One record that played while we were negotiating was "Fast Freight", an obscure instrumental (with an explosive ending) by Arvee Allens (aka Ritchie Valens). I was hoping that the barman would offer to let us have the room for free if we knew the name of that track. Never happened! The second, much more gob-smacking moment came a couple of months later in a small provincial town in the Madrid area. We were having a simple lunch when out of the blue came the opening vocal line of "WIBN"! It was a ringtone. Scared the life out of me it did--first I thought maybe something in the food was making me hear things.

I was at the local liquor store, where they usually play a lot of '60s and '70s classic rock. Not what might nowadays be called classic rock as time marches on, but the stuff that was the first to be called it: Zeppelin, Hendrix, Beatles, Eagles, etc.
This was playing when I walked in today. I was NOT expecting it!

I was also at the local liquor store, where they usually play a mixture of stuff, from recentish pop to classical, and heard this. I've always loved the Roxy Music album Avalon but even more so since hearing Bill Murray sing "More Than This" in a karaoke bar in Lost in Translation. But that day I heard the title track:

But that day I heard the title track: I love "Avalon". It takes me back to the early days of MTV. They played the video what seemed like every hour. BTW, "More Than This", or at least the music, is featured on a TV commercial. I'm not sure what the product is; I saw/heard it during a football game yesterday.

I just saw a (car?) commercial with Queen's "Tear It Up," the B-side to the not-especially-big single "Hammer to Fall" off the 1984 album The Works.
I did not expect that.

Oh wow. My favorite grocery store was playing Purple's Highway Star and Alice Cooper's Be My Lover yesterday.

kds, my local Weis grocery store finally played a wild, cool song to rival yours - "Summertime Blues" by Blue Cheer - after it had played "Like A Rolling Stone" by Mr. Dylan. Back-to-back wows!

That's hilarious, I also heard Blue Cheer's Summertime Blues at the grocery store yesterday, at a Weis in Baltimore County.

Also mentioned in the episode was (kind of, in an unsatisfactory way) POB.
I was also surprised not to hear mentioned Cotton Mather, the Wondermints, or Splittsville's Pet Soul, considering some of that else they did mention. No Shoes or Rubinoos either.

I enjoy that channel quite a bit. The guy on the bottom left, Martin Popoff, is a very prolific hard rock / metal author. I've read quite a few of his books on Sabbath, Purple, Whitesnake, Floyd, Scorpions, Rainbow, Maiden, BOC, Accept, Queen, and Alice Cooper.
