Is it so bad? Losses to Wisconsin and Ohio State are nothing to be ashamed of.

The Gophers basketball team just got a commitment from a Top 100 player, class of '20 combo guard Jamal Mashburn Jr (whose dad played for our coach Richard Pitino's dad at Kentucky).
While it's a nice signing--our second of three for the year--we still haven't landed a single in-state player despite five being within the Top 100 nationally and something like seven having been offered. We've already lost guys to Baylor, Cincinnati, and Wisconsin (2), and look like we're going to lose more. Hmpf.

The Gophers are in New Jersey this afternoon to take on Rutgers and, assuming things go as expected, win and improve to 7-0. The team is playing better the past few weeks, and with all due respect to the Scarlet Knights, they should be the superior team today.
That said, the Gophers (and Minnesota teams in general) are famous for blowing it when the going should be good.

The win was good, but nothing to feel good about. Honestly that Rutgers team is TERRIBLE. We should have won 56-0. But 7-0 is 7-0.

Today, in about 45 minutes, #17 Minnesota hosts #4 Penn St in the Gophers' biggest game in at least 15 years. It was 2003, I think, when Glen Mason's 6-0, #13 Gophers hosted #17 Michigan. That game got off to a great start but Minnesota eventually lost a 21-point lead and then the game. It was a crushing loss, the kind of result you expect as a Minnesotan sports fan.
We certainly aren't favored today, but at 8-0 it is our best start in something like 60 years, since Minnesota was a national powerhouse program. This is far and away the Gophers' toughest game so far this season after a relatively easy schedule up until now. With Penn St today and Iowa and Wisconsin (plus Northwestern) ahead, that changes and we find out whether we're truly just middle of the pack again, as we have mostly been since Glen Mason took over in the late 90s (minus a couple years of truly atrocious football under Tim Brewster in the mid-to-late 00s).

It's a huge game for Penn State, too, if they want to compete for a national title. Penn State had big wins against Michigan and Iowa, and they still play Ohio State, but today is big.

Rough day for Michigan St falling to Illinois, which is really on a tear winning 4 straight. Illinois is bowl eligible for the first time since 2015.

And it’s a double duty day for the Gophers fans: our basketball team is playing Oklahoma in Sioux Falls SD in a Coaches v Cancer showcase.

This afternoon the Gophers play in Iowa. Minnesota is a 3-point underdog despite the undefeated record (and Iowa's three losses) ... which actually sounds about right. I'm on pins and needles about it. But I'll get a pot of soup going--I'm doing a cabbage and white bean with a ham hock in there--rake the lawn for the fiftieth (ok, third) and last time, maybe wander the used bookstore, and then settle in for the big game.

Wow, that's awful. One ray of hope may be that sports medicine has come a long, long way in the past few decades. For example, back in the '90s an ACL injury was still, if not career-ending, certainly career-threatening. Now it's serious, sure, but common ... and commonly overcome (after a solid year or so).
Hopefully Tua can recover from this, if that's what he wants to do.

Very disappointing. A lot of missed opportunities and an especially horrendous kicking game. That's just not going to work on the road against a team as good as Iowa. So, 9-1. (Which ain't so bad.)
