Specifically, the ones that you make. Just for the fun of it!
When Let It Be was released in May 1970, it was The Beatles thirteenth studio album. But what if The Beatles didn't break up, continued to record as a group, and released a fourteenth studio album in 1971? It might've sounded something like this:
The Beatles - XlV
Side 1 01 Imagine 02 My Sweet Lord 03 Too Many People 04 Jealous Guy 05 It Don't Come Easy 06 Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
Side 2 07 Love 08 What Is Life 09 Maybe I'm Amazed 10 Instant Karma 11 In The Back Seat Of My Car 12 All Things Must Pass
Like I noted above, it's all in fun. Even if the Beatles did record an album in 1971, it's impossible to tell which songs would've ended up on solo albums and which ones would've been used for a Beatles' album. This is just a collection of some of the best tracks from that particular time frame, assembled to create a fictional album. I think it is a strong, entertaining compilation, though.
For a lot of my comps, I like to burn them to CD and give them away to family, friends, and co-workers. I even type out title sheets and use jewel cases. This particular comp isn't entirely finished and I would appreciate your feedback in completing it. I have two unanswered questions:
1) For Track 3, I used "Too Many People" because I felt it was the strongest song for that particular slot. It's also a favorite. Of these three songs, which one would you choose for Track 3:
A. Too Many People B. Every Night C. Another Day D. None of the above (Do you have a suggestion?)
2) For the sequencing on Side 2, would you go with:
A) "Instant Karma" then "In The Back Seat Of My Car" B) "In The Back Seat Of My Car" then "Instant Karma" C) An alternate sequence
Thank you for your input. I hope you give this Beatles' comp a listen and enjoy it. Any feedback is appreciated!

My first thought when seeing "Too Many People" as the 3rd track was that "Another Day" might work better. I say that despite vastly preferring "Too Many People" on a song by song basis. Listening to both in sequence - both work well. "Too Many People" works surprisingly well and I like the "you took your lucky break and broke it in two" lyric immediately preceding "Jealous Guy". With that said, I nominate "Dear Boy". The flow is even better. It's still interesting lyrically, perhaps more so. The group vocals lend itself to the concept of the compilation. Paul's bass vocals can easily be confused with John's. And the high vocal part that concludes the song might be the most Beatle-esque moment of all their solo careers. Furthermore, the effect on Paul's lead vocal provides some much needed continuity (otherwise John's lead vocals stick out due to the echo/effects applied). I'd also consider using the new remixes of "Imagine" and "Jealous Guy". I'm not super familiar with them, but the vocals aren't buried like they are in the original mixes. Besides, hearing a fresh mix will sound a little new, a little different. Which I think is a good thing considering the premise of the compilation. From there, I started tinkering with your sequencing (probably too much - ha). The mix of "It Don't Come Easy" was really starting to bother me...so that's out. "Back Off Boogaloo" replaces it. Though, in the meantime, I decided that "What Is Life" worked well as the 5th track. So, this is what I had... 01 Imagine 02 My Sweet Lord 03 Dear Boy 04 Jealous Guy 05 What Is Life 06 Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey Then, (admittedly) I went off in my own direction a bit... 07 Instant Karma 08 I Dig Love 09 Maybe I'm Amazed 10 Power To The People 11 All Things Must Pass 12 Back Off Boogaloo "Love" works pretty well as the 13th track, but I decided to leave it off for now. I've never come up with satisfactory '70s Beatles comps before, so I may return to this. I'd have to edit the volume of a few tracks so that they'd be balanced, I'd want to edit a few intros/fades, and I'd try to come up with a shorter edit of "I Dig Love". Btw, I also considered including "Isn't It A Pity (Version 2)". I really liked it, but I felt that I couldn't include both ATMP and IIAP(V2). I realize that I only included 3 Paul songs, but I'd make up for that on future albums. Still, I'd try to stick to about 4 songs each between John, Paul, and George, and then 1 or 2 Ringo songs depending on the year. That's what was proposed by John in Sept/Oct 1969 for future Beatles albums, but Paul balked. One last thing, if you're having trouble sequencing "The Back Seat Of My Car", try preceding it with the "Ram On" reprise.

Hey, thanks for the feedback, B.E. I really appreciate it. I'm going to take some time to listen to your sequence before I comment exclusively. One thing I know already, though, is that "It Don't Come Easy" is a keeper. That song might be my favorite Beatles' solo song and I rank it right up there with any other solo songs including "Imagine", "Band On The Run", and any of George's. Oh, I love "Back Off Boogaloo" a lot, but not as much as "It Don't Come Easy", and it might fall too much into 1972 (I know that's being a stickler).

"Back Off Boogaloo" was recording in September of '71. I think if you plan on doing one for each year (through 1975?), you'll need to give yourself plenty of leeway. It's hard enough as it is. And with each new comp you can always reach back to unused songs (e.g. I might include "It Don't Come Easy" on my '72 comp). Btw, the new remix of "Power To The People" is worth checking out as well. These are the "ultimate" mixes. They are on spotify and youtube. Anyway, your initial sequence may very well be the best. At some point, I stopped trying to perfect your comp and started making up my own.

Right now, "Instant Karma" is driving me nuts. John's 1, 2 count-in is perfect for a side opener (like you did), but the fade out with "we all shine on..." is so poignant with John's passing that I can't keep it away from the end.

This thread got me to find my theoretical 1973 "Beatles album" comp. I probably made it...15 years ago? A long while back, anyway. I don't have a tracklisting on it, just the disc labeled "Beafles 1973" because apparently sharpies and/or blank disc labeling made me nervous or dumb. But anyway, I'll give it a listen and let you know what it included.

Sheriff John Stone What I like about "I Dig Love" is that it's very Beatle-y. Those drum fills remind me of "Come Together". I could also see the other Beatles getting behind it (to contrast the more ambitious/serious/spiritual George-penned songs). I also like the flow (following "Instant Karma") and it allows Side 2 to really rock (btw, that's another reason I like "Dear Boy" on Side 1 - that piano really picks things up). I know you're sticking with "It Don't Come Easy", but I think closing the comp with "Back Off Boogaloo" is kinda fun. It's unexpected. It's also a call-back to how the Beatles used to close their albums - with a rocker! It had always been John (or George), but now it's Ringo. On one of the follow ups, I'd have Paul close it out.

If I remember correctly, at that time I did two post-Beatles "Beatles albums." I assume it was 1970 or 1971 and then this 1973 one. No idea what happened to the earlier one, though. It doesn't seem to be among the gigantic stack of burned discs among which I found this 1973 one.
That stack does remind me how life was when virtually unlimited storage wasn't available, though! I'd always burn to disc so I could keep the hard drives from filling up. Now I recently had to buy a separate component to rip, burn, and play CDs and DVDs with the laptop since they don't have disc drives anymore. So much for my brilliant ideas 15 years ago.

OK, I've given it a listen and I have to say, I am a little baffled as to what I was thinking back in 2004 or so when I made this album--which, I should note, is a 20-song double album. It omits some of the most obvious songs, particularly Paul's but also John's in a few cases, most notably "Band on the Run," "Jet," and "Mind Games." My guess is that I was thinking they were too immediately identifiable as solo songs, but who knows?
I also included some of the not-so-great songs that featured other Beatles, so "I'm the Greatest" is included.
Anyway, here you have it: "Beafles 1973"
1. Big Barn Bed (McCartney) 2. Don’t Let Me Wait Too Long (Harrison) 3. Tight A$ (Lennon) 4. Deep Blue (Harrison) 5. I Know (I Know) (Lennon)
6. Step Lightly (Starr) 7. Sue Me, Sue You Blues (Harrison) 8. Let Me Roll It (McCartney) 9. Living In A Material World (Harrison)
10. Out of the Blue (Lennon)
11. Photograph (Starr) 12. One More Kiss (McCartney) 13. Intuition (Lennon) 14. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) (Harrison) 15. No Words (McCartney)
16. Only People (Lennon) 17. Six O’Clock (Starr) 18. Little Lamb Dragonfly (McCartney) 19. I’m the Greatest (Starr) 20. My Love (McCartney)

I'm blanking has The Monkey's Uncle ever appeared on a BB comp/box? To the best of my knowledge, no. They probably didn't think it necessary, and maybe the licensing ($$$$$$) prohibited it.
